SUMMARY:Amending the Cat Act
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to support urgent implementation of Local Cat Laws in your area. \nUpcoming changes to the State Cat Act will allow Local Governments to introduce local laws promoting responsible cat ownership\, including containment. \nThese changes will allow Local Governments to provide a framework for local laws which promote responsible cat ownership\, including cat containment. Check out a recent article in The Conversation. \nLet’s get ready to ensure Local Cat laws to manage roaming cats are implemented in your area urgently! \nEven if your Local Government already has cat prohibited areas\, there’s more you can do to improve effectiveness. \nLearn how your community group can help. \nOur Speaker \nDr Bruce Webber will explain how Local Governments can adopt effective cat laws that protect wildlife\, public health\, and cat wellbeing. He will also share strategies for promoting responsible pet ownership and addressing community concerns. \n“permanent cat containment done well is the right thing to do for cats\, people and wildlife” \nBruce is the Executive Manager of Science and Conservation at Bush Heritage Australia and leading a national conservation program to help Australia achieve its 30 by 30 commitment.  He joined Bush Heritage from the CSIRO and was previously a Research Director at the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI). He is an Executive member of the WA Feral Cat Working Group and also holds an Adjunct Professorship with UWA. \nJoin Us\nWe hope that you will join us City West Lotteries House\, 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth.  The doors will open at 6:00 pm for light refreshments; session starts at 6:30 pm. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along. You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au. \nIf you can’t make it to West Perth\, you can join us online via Zoom. SUMMARY:Volunteer Brunch: Hills to the Coast
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we come together during National Volunteer Week 2026 to recognise and celebrate the many years of dedication shown by our bushcarers. \nThis is a special opportunity to acknowledge those who give so generously of their time and energy to care and advocate for our precious bushlands – often in tough conditions\, always with deep commitment to the natural environment. A chance to connect with fellow volunteers\, acknowledge shared achievements and look ahead to the future of bushcare\, including volunteer recruitment and supporting the next generation of carers. \nUBC’s co-hosts are: \n\nNature Reserves Preservation Group (Kalamunda)\nFriends of Brixton Street Wetlands (Gosnells)\nFriends of the Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore (Canning)\nWildflower Society of WA – Armadale Branch (Armadale).\n\nTheir members ‘work’ within the catchment of the Yule Brook\, an important waterway that originates as Upper Lesmurdie Falls and empties into the Canning River.  Along the way it feeds the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands – an extraordinary area that contains around half of Greater Perth’s floral species in just 1% of the region. Collectively\, these organisations represent more than 195 years of urban conservation experience\, protecting bushland under increasing pressure from climate change and development – just like you! \nSponsored by: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPlease register by 15 May so that we can sort out catering.
