SUMMARY:Seed Genetics and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Are you thinking about genetic diversity as you plan your next revegetation project? \nSeed genetics play an important role in the success of restoration projects but is often considered too hard to understand. \nThe genetic diversity of seed is\, however\, the evolutionary material that allows plant populations to respond to environmental change. \nPopulation size\, reproductive strategy\, pollinator movements and distance between populations are just some of the important influences on seed genetic diversity. \nUnderstanding these influences can help collectors to source seed with high genetic diversity that will help to ensure the long-term success of their restoration projects. \nOur speaker\nDr Linda Broadhurst recently retired as Director of the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research\, a joint venture between CSIRO National Research Collections Australia and the Director of National Parks. \nDuring Linda’s research career her has research interests included conservation and restoration genetics and improving seed collection practices for better restoration outcomes. \nShe also spent many years translating scientific findings to help improve on ground seed collection and use practices to ensure that plantings has a broad genetic base \nJoin Us\nWe hope that you will join us City West Lotteries House\, 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth.  The doors will open at 6:00 pm for light refreshments; session starts at 6:30 pm. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along. DESCRIPTION:Why care for the bush \nAs people spread out across the landscape\, we lose habitat for our native species. Plants have to compete with introduced species. This extensive wetland is only 1% of the Perth metro area reserves but is home to 70% of Perth’s floral species. Some are small or hard to find. A lot of them were burned recently. There is a lot to learn about this reserve. \nWe at the Urban Bushland Council are concerned about the loss of our natural species. We aim to encourage you to join in with efforts to care for nature in the bush and extend bush habitat. \nTo start\, we invite you to a free workshop to share stories about our bush\, share uncertainties\, talk about volunteering\, and meet nearby neighbours. \nGreen Edge Pinkgill Fungi. Dhakal.\nPerhaps you will be enthused to plant native species in your garden. \nPerhaps you will join a group of volunteers who help to rehabilitate a reserve somewhere … or one of the many other ways you can join in. \nYou will meet people from a range of community associations as well as local indigenous leaders\, community environmental groups and experts with local and scientific knowledge. \nYou will also join a guided walk so we can show you the amazing biodiversity of our local bush. \nJoin us\nSunday September 27\, 2026 at at Connect@Kenwick\, sometimes called the Mud Hut\, at 84 Brixton Street\, Kenwick from 10 am. DESCRIPTION:What would Perth look like if nature was woven back through our suburbs — connecting bushland\, cooling our neighbourhoods and giving wildlife room to move? A free event at Scitech with Dr. Jane Chambers\, how connecting people and nature through urban greening can improve the quality of life for all species in Perth. \nOUR SPEAKERS\nKeynote: Dr Jane Chambers \nDirector of NatureLink Perth and Senior Lecturer in Environmental and Conservation Sciences at Murdoch University. Be inspired by Dr Jane Chambers\, as she shares a vision of Perth and Peel as a green city connected to nature\, promoting our health and wellbeing while sustaining our globally significant biodiversity….and most importantly – how we are going get there and how you can be part of it. Creating multifunctional greenspaces\, using a science-based approach to ensure urban greening promotes ecological connectivity\, function and services and giving us all a sense of place. Learn how you can help wildlife move safely between fragmented remnant bushland through naturelinks and stepping stone habitat plantings. Every bit we do makes a difference! \nSpeaker: Caitlin Broadfoot \nCaitlin is the GIS Project Coordinator in the Urban Greening Team at the Department of Planning\, Lands and Heritage\, where she enjoys combining her background in environmental science and sustainability with a passion for data and equitable access to nature. She played a pivotal role in the redesigned Urban Greening Dashboard which the Department hopes will evolve to become a valuable\, shared resource to engage the community in urban greening. Caitlin will take us on a tour of the dashboard\, highlighting its features\, tips\, and tricks to help you explore how vegetation is distributed in our region and communities. \nSpeaker: Sue Conlan \nLongstanding volunteer for both Urban Bushland Council and Friends of Mosman Park Bushland. Formerly a medical scientist\, Sue now practices full time in preventative medicine and assists community to restore their local bushland. Sue will explain how you can be part of the Perth’s Urban Greening strategy by applying for a Let’s Grow Grant\, available through DPLH to create pockets of local vegetation around schools\, sports ovals\, public buildings\, verges and any available local  spaces in your community to create habitat for local wildlife\, cool our suburbs and encourage active transport. \nTeam up with a community group\, school\, Local Government and a volunteer bushcare group to Green your suburb. \nJoin us at Scitech \nWe are holding this event at Scitech in the Chevron Science Theatre. There is excellent public transport: Scitech is on the north side of the City West Train Station.  Enter the City West Centre from Plaistowe Mews. There is also paid parking below Scitech.  As a visitor to Scitech you can access a $5 for 5 hours parking ticket via parking machines located inside (ie upstairs) at the City West Centre. Just remember to make a note of your licence plate number. Light refreshments will be available from 6 pm and the presentations will commence at 6:30 pm. \nThank you to Scitech for making the Chevron Science Theatre available to the Urban Bushland Council for this very important theme of urban greening.
