DESCRIPTION:Help Protect our Urban Bushland Quendas and other wildlife! \nCan we do more to save wildlife in our suburban bushland? Can we reduce the risks from fire\, feral animals and urbanisation? \nAlthough much has been lost from our urban remnant patches\, there is still much to protect. We also know how Quendas can improve bushland soil health and improve the condition of remnant bushland. Although listed as a priority species\, Quendas are doing well in some bushland areas. You can read again our recent article about Quendas in Star Swamp \nGuest speaker – Geoff Barrett\nGeoff Barrett is a Regional Ecologist for DBCA working on suburban wildlife since 2008 in Perth. He is involved in strategic planning for biodiversity\, habitat restoration and biodiversity monitoring. Citizen science projects include black cockatoo surveys (BirdLife WA – Great Cocky Count)\, quenda (bandicoot) and rakali (water rat) community surveys (World Wide Fund) and the western ringtail possum (GeoCatch and Wirambi Landcare). \nSo\, come and listen to a status report on Quendas in urban areas and find out what you might be able to do in your own bushland. \n\n \nTicketing\nPlease let us know you are coming by obtaining a ticket. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Walk through the Ocean Reef coastal bushland area making way for the great Ocean Reef Marina
DESCRIPTION:We regret that we need to postpone this walk given the COVID-19 crisis. However we will keep this event listed on our website to let you all know that the reconnaissance for the walk uncovered even more species in the  species rich 30 ha coastal area to be cleared and that UBC will continue to advocate that government reconsider the 1000+ residential and deep water marina development. \nBushland lost! If not already cleared\, this might be your last chance to see what will go at Ocean Reef. Clearing Permit approval is pending. \nLearn what the community bushland representative group\, Joondalup Community Coast Care Forum (JCCCF)\, have had to do to get the best outcome possible for the birds\, quendas\, graceful sun moth\, reptiles and much more. \nThe Bush Forever site here took a considerable loss last year with MRS rezoning. So the ecological linkage will be greatly diminished. At two points the narrow linkage for resident animals such as quendas\, bobtails\, lizards\, graceful sun moths will be treacherous as they attempt to cross roads. \nFurthermore\, the natural setting for those using the dual path for recreation and connection to nature will be spoilt as they pass by 1000 residences and hot carparks. \nThe building of the Ocean Reef Marina will create jobs and provide a bigger boating area to what already exists. \nHowever many more people will be affected by the loss of this irreplaceable coastal natural area that Aussies so much enjoy. We always prided ourselves on leaving the foreshore for all people.

SUMMARY:UBC Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come along to UBC’s Annual General Meeting and hear Greg Keighery talk about the ‘blooming biodiversity‘ of Western Australia.  Greg Keighery\, is a renowned botanist who has been largely responsible for regional scale surveys to establish conservation networks. He was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the General Division for service to conservation and the environment. \nWhat is World Class about Western Australia? Blooming Biodiversity\, why is it ignored?\nWe know that WA is a State bigger than most countries\, containing some of the world’s oldest rocks\, fossils and life forms\, one of the world’s oldest cultures and largest wilderness area. This very old land surface has led to the relatively recent burst of speciation in our flowering plants in southern Western Australia (Southwest). This is what is truly world class about WA\, recognised internationally as being one of the original 25 biodiversity hotspots of the planet and the only one in Australia. \nWhy is this so? \n \nThere over 8\,000 flowering plants in the Southwest\, over 80% of these species are found nowhere else. Within these ranks are many other superlatives\, over 800 species pollinated by birds\, highest in the world. Giving us such large brilliant coloured flowers as the state flower the Kangaroo Paw. Other amazing features of the Southwest wildflowers include: the greatest number of sexually deceptive orchids in the world; very large numbers of ground orchids especially the Spider Orchids; diverse systems of root types; the most species of\, and the largest plants\, in the world of the carnivorous plant genus Drosera; and the world’s largest parasitic plant\, Nuytsia floribunda. \nUnfortunately this amazing biodiversity is also listed because it is under threat. \nHowever\, unlike the Great Barrier Reef there is no Federal Body that operates to assist in conserving this international asset. Why is this so? Why isn’t the south-west listed by Australia as a World Heritage Site\, like Kakadu\, and many other areas in eastern Australia? Why are there NO staff from the federal environment department in WA \, considering that we have  8 of the 15 national biodiversity hotspots in WA.  Why is so much money spent on the Murray-Darling or Tasmania compared to the flora of the WA Wheatbelt\, recognised nationally as under great threat? \nI feel that an “oriental” perspective of all aspects of our country by both politicians and the media\, is giving poor leadership\, a previous and continuing fixation on forests combined with the time required to understand and hence appreciate the amazing complexity and beauty of our flora and finally a lack of connection to the Western Australian landscape by Western Australians are the major drivers.

SUMMARY:The fire ecology of Banksia woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Russell Miller is a PhD candidate\, Murdoch University\, Kings Park Science and will discuss his research on the fire ecology of Banksia woodlands. \nBanksia woodlands have a long association with fire. Over tens of thousands of years\, our local plant species have developed strategies not only to tolerate but sometimes benefit from recurrent fire. A fundamental concept in fire ecology is that plants are adapted to certain fire regimes (i.e.\, frequency\, seasonality\, and intensity) but if populations experience fire outside of this\, they are likely to decline. \nFor his PhD research\, he investigated how native plant populations change with time since fire and under varying fire seasonality to identify species’ tolerance of varying fire regimes. \nField surveys revealed post-fire juvenile periods of 1 – 5 years\, indicating that populations recover reproductive maturity quickly after fire and even some obligate seeding species may have the capacity to cope with relatively short fire intervals. Surveys also showed that seedling recruitment occurs during the inter-fire period\, a phenomenon uncommon in fire-prone ecosystems but not unexpected given our knowledge that canopy seed bank species are weakly serotinous in Banksia woodlands.  \nInter-fire recruitment may help buffer populations from decline with the long absence of fire. Russell also conducted a field trial emulating the effects of season of fire and showed that unseasonal fire can substantially reduce seedling recruitment. Poor recruitment from emulated unseasonal fire was the result of low seedling emergence\, shortened seedling establishment times\, and reduced seed persistence. \nOverall\, his research extends our understanding of the unique fire ecology of Banksia woodlands and reveals the potential consequences of altered fire regimes. \n

SUMMARY:Anstey-Keane Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join UBC and Friends of Forrestdale for a walk through the urban treasure of Anstey Keane damplands. \nIt is the second most floristically diverse Bush Forever site on the Swan Coastal Plain and has more plant species than Kings Park.  More importantly\, its vegetation is in excellent condition. It is an area of high biological importance. \nYou will be guided by locals\, David and Bryony who love this bushland and are fighting to stop human incursions. They will show us some special places. SUMMARY:Successful Environmental Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:Join members for a panel discussion focused around  securing success in environmental campaigns. We will also be considering UBC membership fees. \nNotice of General Meeting to discuss Special Resolutions to increase UBC Fees \nFor some time now\, the Committee has been discussing the long-term financial viability of UBC.  For those who have attended recent AGMs you will remember that the financial reports over the past few years have shown a Net Loss. Operating expenditure has exceeded income. Hence UBC has been eating into its reserves to meet its modest operating costs. \nDuring 2018 the UBC Committee closely reviewed all its expenditure to find ways of reducing costs.  Doing this has resulted in a net reduction in costs of about $1\,000 or 10% of our running costs. At the same time  we have experienced additional operating costs\, including being charged for the hire of the Conference Room at City West. However\, donations have allowed us to close the gap between income and expenditure.  In 2019\, our donations have increased to around 58% of total income from 46% in 2018.  This is very welcome. But it is risky to base our financial future on very generous donations by a few individuals. \nAfter much discussion\, the Committee has recommended that the Membership Fees be increased by $15 effective from 1 January 2020. As per our Rules (15 (1))\, any membership increase must be discussed and approved by a General Meeting of voting members (Member Groups) of UBC. \nPanel Discussion: Securing Success in Environmental Campaigns\nAfter the formalities of the meeting\, stay for the panel discussion\, and hear some local stories. We know that conserving our urban bushland for our grandchildren requires perseverance and resilience.  It is hard work. \n\nHow can we learn from the successes of others?\nHow can we increase community awareness of environmental issues?\nHow do we sustain our advocacy and activism?\nHow can we help each other?

SUMMARY:Baigup Wetlands on the Swan River Maylands - Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:This site visit is a chance to meet people from other community environment groups around the metro area while exploring a beautiful Bush Forever site on the Swan River that deserves to be better known. Baigup Wetlands is a 16.4 ha reserve that attracts many different kinds of birds all year round. \nPlaces are limited – please book. Details at the bottom of the page. \n \nTwo freshwater lakes are home to our South-western Snake-necked (aka ‘oblong’) Turtles which breed in the surrounding vegetation (Geoff McDonald image). \nSixteen species of waterbirds use the lakes for breeding. There is just a chance you may see gorgeous Australian Shelduck ducklings with their unbelievably protective parents or Buff-banded Rail chicks looking like fluffy black pompoms on their long spindly legs. These are two species that have been observed with young in September in previous years. \nChallenges at Baigup include Acid Sulphate scalds\, damage to the riverbank by speeding boats\, fox and cat predation of wildlife\, death of native vegetation due to salinity in places\, and a daunting history of massive weed infestation. Strenuous efforts by Baigup Wetland Interest Group and the reserve managers (City of Bayswater and Department of Planning\, Lands and Heritage) have got weeds under control in recent years but Pampas Grass\, Blackberry\, Arum Lily\, Morning Glory and Dolichos Vine (that smother and kill native trees)\, plus pretty well every annual weed\, especially Blackberry Nightshade\, you can think of\, still demand constant vigilance. \nBut for every challenge there are also victories. Extensive planting and water management along with ongoing weed control is providing habitat for an increasing number of birds\, animals and reptiles. Perhaps Quenda will be reintroduced eventually? That is one of the goals of Baigup Wetland Interest Group and the City of Bayswater. \nHow to get there:\nMeet in Hinds Reserve car park next to the Paddlesports (aka Rowing Club) facilities at the end of Milne Street Bayswater. Members of Baigup Wetland Interest Group will meet you there and take you into Baigup Wetlands itself. Wear sun protection and sturdy footwear and bring insect repellent or wear long sleeves and pants in case mosquitoes are around.

DESCRIPTION:Find out how Wireless Hill Reserve ‘war on weeds‘ strategies can help you! \nCome hear Margaret Matthews tell the story of  the war on weeds at Wireless Hill. \nThis treasure of Banksia Woodland has survived in suburbia but like most bushland in developed urban areas has suffered from an infestation of many types of weeds. \n \nLocals saw plants worth saving\, banded together with the land manager and now this park has regenerated to surprise and delight its carers. \nSo what did the Friends of Wireless Hill want to save? \nWhat were their worst weeds? \nWhy weeding wasn’t working and how they got smart by winning grants for hand weeding which are still available today. \nHand weeding 5.4 hectares is not easy but worth it to see how it has facilitated the recovery of a diversity of plants. \nPerennial Veldt Grass can look dead at the end of summer but beware – it springs to life with winter rains! \nIntroducing our speaker\nMargaret Matthews has been a member of the Friends of Wireless Hill since 2003.  She was the Convenor for about five years and is currently the Secretary and Treasurer as well as the grant manager.  She is also the Treasurer of the Friends of Underwood Avenue Bushland. \nMargaret currently spends most of her time helping organise the national Wildflower Conference being hosted by the Wildflower Society in Albany from 29 September 2019. SUMMARY:Native Bees and our Bushland
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Terry Houston for an entertaining talk about native bees in our bushland. Dr Houston is Research Associate\, Dept. of Terrestrial Zoology (Entomology) Western Australian Museum\, 49 Kew St\, Welshpool. \nInhabiting the Perth Region is a substantial native bee fauna – around 80 species – which is highly dependent on the native flora. New bee species have been coming to light year after year and many await naming and description. The natural history of relatively few bee species has been studied in any detail\, but some fascinating behaviours are found among those that have. An example is the ‘megamouth bee’ (pictured above) that was discovered in Forrestdale several years ago. \nThe rapid destruction of bushlands in the region means that some species are becoming scarce and\, without adequate conservation of the diverse vegetation systems of the region\, some are at risk of going extinct. One specimen of a species already presumed to be extinct\, Douglas’s Broad-headed Bee Hesperocolletes douglasi (pictured below)\, was collected in Banksia woodland on Perth’s northern outskirts in 2015 by Juliana Pille Arnold\, a PhD student at the University of WA and recently made headlines in the local news. This rediscovery and other finds of special interest will be detailed in this presentation to illustrate some of the joys and frustrations of trying to document the biology of native bees. \nDr Houston is also the author of A Guide to Native Bees of Australia\, in which he discusses the estimated 2000 species of Australian bees.

The Friends of Hepburn & Pinnaroo Bushland is the successor to this group and some of the original members are still actively involved. The Urban Bushland Council was established as a consequence of the Hepburn Heights campaign.

DESCRIPTION:The UBC Committee invites you to join them in celebrating 25 years of the Urban Bushland Council. \nOn the 21st March\, 1993\, 85 individuals met in Kings Park to highlight their concerns about the destructive impacts on our fabulous urban bushland and to launch the UBC. Jane Blake\, the UBC’s inaugural president\, addressed the group. \n25 years later\, 1\,000s of individuals\, 100s of groups and 100s of partnerships have contributed to raising awareness and understanding as well as improving the conservation security of WA’s amazing urban bushlands. \nThank you for your efforts thus far. Whilst there is still lots to do – it is also time to celebrate with you! \nVenue: Saw Avenue Picnic Area\, Kings Park. \nWhen:  Sunday 15th April 1000 – 1200.
