SUMMARY:War on Weeds
DESCRIPTION:Find out how Wireless Hill Reserve ‘war on weeds‘ strategies can help you! \nCome hear Margaret Matthews tell the story of  the war on weeds at Wireless Hill. \nThis treasure of Banksia Woodland has survived in suburbia but like most bushland in developed urban areas has suffered from an infestation of many types of weeds. \n \nLocals saw plants worth saving\, banded together with the land manager and now this park has regenerated to surprise and delight its carers. \nSo what did the Friends of Wireless Hill want to save? \nWhat were their worst weeds? \nWhy weeding wasn’t working and how they got smart by winning grants for hand weeding which are still available today. \nHand weeding 5.4 hectares is not easy but worth it to see how it has facilitated the recovery of a diversity of plants. \nPerennial Veldt Grass can look dead at the end of summer but beware – it springs to life with winter rains! \nIntroducing our speaker\nMargaret Matthews has been a member of the Friends of Wireless Hill since 2003.  She was the Convenor for about five years and is currently the Secretary and Treasurer as well as the grant manager.  She is also the Treasurer of the Friends of Underwood Avenue Bushland. \nMargaret currently spends most of her time helping organise the national Wildflower Conference being hosted by the Wildflower Society in Albany from 29 September 2019. At that time she will take on the role of President of the Australian National Plants Society. \nHear how a strategic approach has paid off in enhanced bushland health and diversity at Wireless Hill. \nJoin us on Wednesday 10th July from 6 pm for 6.30 pm start. $5 donation for lucky door prize.

SUMMARY:Native Bees and our Bushland
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Terry Houston for an entertaining talk about native bees in our bushland. Dr Houston is Research Associate\, Dept. of Terrestrial Zoology (Entomology) Western Australian Museum\, 49 Kew St\, Welshpool. \nInhabiting the Perth Region is a substantial native bee fauna – around 80 species – which is highly dependent on the native flora. New bee species have been coming to light year after year and many await naming and description. The natural history of relatively few bee species has been studied in any detail\, but some fascinating behaviours are found among those that have. An example is the ‘megamouth bee’ (pictured above) that was discovered in Forrestdale several years ago. \nThe rapid destruction of bushlands in the region means that some species are becoming scarce and\, without adequate conservation of the diverse vegetation systems of the region\, some are at risk of going extinct. One specimen of a species already presumed to be extinct\, Douglas’s Broad-headed Bee Hesperocolletes douglasi (pictured below)\, was collected in Banksia woodland on Perth’s northern outskirts in 2015 by Juliana Pille Arnold\, a PhD student at the University of WA and recently made headlines in the local news. This rediscovery and other finds of special interest will be detailed in this presentation to illustrate some of the joys and frustrations of trying to document the biology of native bees. \nDr Houston is also the author of A Guide to Native Bees of Australia\, in which he discusses the estimated 2000 species of Australian bees.

SUMMARY:BLACK COCKATOOS AND BANKSIAS
DESCRIPTION:Black cockatoos and Banksias are much-loved icons of our natural heritage. \nEnjoy a morning learning about these bushland jewels at Bold Park. Here you can share information on their nature and interdependence and the fragility of their numbers. You will also learn about community efforts to conserve them into the future. \n\nExplore Bold Park with us\nThe Urban Bushland Council warmly invites you to spend the morning exploring the Black Cockatoos and Banksias at Bold Park. This is part of our celebration of the 2019 Australian Heritage Festival. Bold Park is one of the largest bushland remnants in the urban area of the Swan Coastal Plain\, and home to the Western Australian Ecology Centre where we will meet. \nSome great speakers will share some of their knowledge and understandings about these two iconic\, but threatened bushland treasures. Then they will guide you on a walk through beautiful Tuart-Banksia Woodland to the lookout at Reabold Hill. We will also pause along the way to identify the Banksia species and other native flora and fauna encountered. \nThrough this\, you will appreciate the unique biodiversity of Bold Park within its urban context through the panoramic views from the lookout. You will also learn a little about community efforts to protect both Black Cockatoos and Banksias\, as well as become familiar some of the challenges to their futures. \nFacilities\nBold Park onsite facilities: Accessible\, with accessible toilets; family events\, guided tours\, parking\, toilets and refreshments available.

SUMMARY:NatureLink Perth: sustaining biodiversity in Perth into the future
DESCRIPTION:The UBC has organized a very special speaker for you at our General Meeting in April! \nSo save this date: Monday 15th April\, 6pm when Dr Jane Chambers will speak of how she and her team at Murdoch University are setting a feverish pace to unravel why plan after plan at State and Local level have not been upheld to sustain Perth’s biodiversity into the future. Hear what Jane has already discovered – and perhaps even add to this – before she takes Naturelink to a Perth Symposium in 4th July\, where all stakeholders will meet. \nHer topic will be: \n‘NatureLink Perth: sustaining biodiversity in Perth into the future’.\n  \nDr Jane Chambers is the Academic Chair of Environmental Science\, Management and Sustainability at Murdoch University. She has over 30 years experience in wetlands\, rivers and estuaries in South Western Australia primarily in the area of aquatic plant ecology\, management and restoration. \nFor more about Dr Jane Chambers see here. \nPhoto credit: Marg Owen. SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Dr Hugh Finn\, Chair of the Board\, Environmental Defenders Office \nTitle: “The Invisible Harm: Land Clearing and the Welfare of Our Native Fauna” \nHugh puts the view that another reason to avoid clearing and another reason to value native vegetation is the harm that land clearing causes to individual wild animals. Hugh will also be happy to deal with any questions about the legal framework for clearing native vegetation. \nThe Environmental Defenders Office (WA) is an independent\, accredited community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law. It is an accredited member of the National Association of Community Legal Centres – independently operated not-for-profit community organisations that provide legal and related services to the public. \nThe EDO’s core objectives are: \n\nProtecting the environment through law.\nActively engaging in policy and law reform processes to improve environmental laws.\nEnsuring that the community receives expert legal advice and representation in public interest environmental matters.\nBuilding community skills and knowledge to facilitate public participation in environmental decision-making.
