Check out a recent article in The Conversation. \nLet’s get ready to ensure Local Cat laws to manage roaming cats are implemented in your area urgently! \nEven if your Local Government already has cat prohibited areas\, there’s more you can do to improve effectiveness. \nLearn how your community group can help. \nOur Speaker \nDr Bruce Webber will explain how Local Governments can adopt effective cat laws that protect wildlife\, public health\, and cat wellbeing. DESCRIPTION:Come along to UBC’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 3rd March 2026 at City West Lotteries House. Catch up for a chat with others passionate about their patch. \nAGM Details\nElections will be held for the 2026 Committee and nominations for all positions have been called. Nominations closed on 10 February. \nNominations have been received for all available positions\, and nominees will be declared elected at the AGM.  Nominees are listed in the agenda for the meeting which is now available from our website (scroll down the page). \nAll paid up Member Groups are eligible to vote. If you wish to appoint someone from another group to act as a Proxy for your Member Group\, you can also download that form from our website. Bring your completed Proxy form to the meeting or else email it to ubc@bushlandperth.org.au by 6:00 pm Monday 2 March. \nThe Annual Report is here \nJoin Us\nWe will open the doors to the Conference Room at 6:00 pm and serve light refreshments. SUMMARY:Introducing BoorYul-Bah-Bilya
DESCRIPTION:BoorYul-Bah-Bilya (BBB) is the flagship program of Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association (BNAA)\, an Aboriginal-led environmental charity based in the Perth Hills. \nThe program’s first plan focuses on the Mandoon Bilya\, or Helena River\, near Perth. \nBBB is all about restoring ecosystems\, reinvigorating cultural heritage and reconnecting our communities with rivers. \nMost Western Australian rivers are degraded and less than 1% of our major rivers are in pristine or near-pristine condition. \nBBB aims to address declining river health through creation of a new type of community catchment plan that is built from the ground up. \nBBB is the first program of its kind to consider environmental\, social\, cultural and economic values in one integrated plan\, allowing a better balance between the many values of rivers. \nIts grassroots approach ensures local knowledge is embedded throughout and enables community\, residents\, businesses\, schools and government to contribute towards the future vision. \nHowever\, BNAA hope to have far-reaching impacts by creating a transferable model that can be applied to any river. \nFor more information\, visit BBB here  \nOur guest speaker \nBNAA Executive Director\, Francesca Flynn\, will share the program’s vision and current projects which include the Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz\, eDNA sampling\, cultural mapping\, monitoring of a recently discovered Perth Hills quokka population\, and the proposed Mandoon Bilya Regional Riverpark. \nJoin Us\nJoin us on Wednesday 24 September  at City West Lotteries House at 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth. DESCRIPTION:What predator proof fencing can do for your bushland!  \nFox/cat and dog fenced Craigie Bushland is a magnificent example of how a bushland can survive\, regenerate and thrive in a climate of two long hot dry years and falling groundwater levels. Read our report from the walk. \n \n Join us to explore regionally significant Bush Forever Site 303 and observe first-hand the positive effect on natural areas of excluding foxes\, cats and dogs and re-introducing native animals.  This is the City of Joondalup’s major conservation area. She worked as a solicitor for the Environmental Defenders Office. She is currently Chair of the Local Government Elected Members Association Inc (LGEMA) working in the public interest in local government good governance\, for now and for her grandchildren’s future. Sandra has just launched her book “Boulter on Local Government” handbook for Elected Members. \nSara Saberi\, former councillor City of Canning.  Sara has been an active bushland volunteer\, also serving on the Urban Bushland Council committee before being elected to the City of Canning 2017- 2023. Daniel is the Deputy for the Yellagonga Regional Park Community Advisory Committee. Daniel ran for council after campaigning to save irreplaceable unique nature for locals. SUMMARY:The Facts about Prescribed Burning
DESCRIPTION:By Peta Kelsey from South-West Forests Defence Foundation Inc. \nThe Department of Biodiversity\, Conservation and Attractions currently spends more that 50 million dollars per year to undertake extensive\, industrial-scale prescribed burning in the South-West Forest Region. \nGeophysicist Peta Kelsey describes DBCA’s current prescribed burning program and discusses its effectiveness in preventing subsequent wildfire and protecting people and infrastructure\, as well as its impact on biodiversity\, forest flammability\, human health and greenhouse gas emissions. \nMuch of the content of her talk can be found in the Prescribed Burning Fact Sheets published on the South-West Forests Defence Foundation website.  These Fact Sheets provide details of the scientific research which shows that prescribed burning as it is currently practised in the south-west forest regions does not give effective protection from wildfires\, is hazardous to people’s health and is causing irreversible loss of biodiversity. \nSFDF contends that rapid detection and suppression provide the best protection from wildfires. \nMore about SFDF\nSouth-West Forests Defence Foundation Inc. DESCRIPTION:Presentation now available\nThe presentation and the recording from Joe Fontaine’s excellent talk on 22 May are now available. \nThe recording: \n\n  \nThe presentation is here  The 2024-2025 Die-off \n___________________________________\nOverview\nUnderstanding\, adapting\, and conserving. \nNone of us can forget the 2024 “big dry” when the bushlands and the forests from north of Geraldton through to Albany in the southwest were dying through lack of rainfall and excessive summer time heat.  Joe Fontaine\, from Murdoch University\, published a great article in The Conversation on 15 April 2024. \n12 months later\, we can now reflect on those impacts and what we have learnt about the vulnerability of bushland\, forest and wetlands ecosystems.  And we are delighted to have Joe Fontaine as our guest speaker to talk about the impacts of heat and drought on our bushlands. \nAbout Joe Fontaine\nJoe Fontaine is an academic at Murdoch University in the School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences leading the Terrestrial Ecology Research Group. \nHis research has focused on fire and forest management\, climate change and their interaction. \nWorking in shrublands\, woodlands\, and forests spanning the Midwest to the south coast Joe has a passion for science that is collaborative and relevant from local to global scales. \nJoin Us \nJoin us on Thursday 22nd May at City West Lotteries House at 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth. SUMMARY:Walk Manning Park Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Manning Park Ridge\nThis is a precious site with Critically Endangered Honeymyrtle Shrubland and a culturally significant ground for the Whadjuk people.  Manning Park Ridge has had an unloved past and is now under pressure from recreation and climate change.  The dry 2024 Autumn caused significant death to Banksia sessilis and surrounding vegetation. \nNonetheless Manning Park Ridge still has large patches of intact limestone shrubland and is surrounded by larger coastal redheart trees\, plus a lake with turtles and also bush birds now lost to many places in Perth. \nThe big questions are: how do we make this site more resilient to climate change? We will call for interest in the role of Secretary at the AGM. \nJoin us in 2025 and help us advocate for change to protect our precious urban natural vegetation and the species that rely on that habitat. \nNOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES TO UBC RULES\nWe have proposed some changes to our Rules at the Annual General Meeting.  They will be available now available here (overview) and in full here.  They are also attached to the Agenda. The main reason for these changes is that our Deductible Gift Recipiency status is now subject to the Rules of the Australian Tax Office.  The other proposed changes will increase responsiveness and reduce the administrative burden on a wholly volunteer run organisation. \nKEYNOTE SPEAKER AGM 2025: DANIEL JAN MARTIN – CREATING THE YULE BROOK REGIONAL PARK \nThis presentation launches UBC’s 2025 campaigning for the creation of the Yule Brook Regional Park. \nDaniel will present a vision for the Yule Brook Regional Park – from Lesmurdie Falls\, along the Yule Brook beside the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands and into the Canning River.  UBC and The Beeliar Group – Professors for Environmental Responsibility (and many others) see the creation of this regional park as the single most effective way of protection the extraordinary biodiversity of the Brixton Street Wetlands and adjacent landforms.  Daniel has been instrumental in developing the mapping that supports the Yule Brook Regional Park. You can read more in A Jewel in the Crown of a global biodiversity hotspot edited by Hans Lambers \nAchieving success will require sustained advocacy.  This area of the Swan Coastal Plain is currently subject to a number of development proposals that all have the potential for environmental harm to the GBSW through changes to hydrology that impact further than the development lines drawn on the map. \nDaniel Jan Martin is an environmental planner and designer working in south west Australia on Noongar Country. He is a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at The University of Western Australia. He also co-leads the collaborative practice Super Natural. His work explores ways of mapping and designing with our water systems and ecosystems — with expertise across geospatial analysis\, sustainability and urban design. Candidate nominations closed on 13 February and now it possible to get the full list of candidates for each electorate. It is vital that these candidates know that protection of the environment is important to our communities and that it deserves a greater priority than it has received from the current government. \nHow you can help\nUBC encourages you to invite your local candidates to your patch; explain why you are passionate about it and how they can help secure the future of your patch as well as nature more broadly. Our black cockatoos\, our urban bushlands and wetlands all need more protection to survive. We have worked closely with CCWA to develop a number of nature specific election priorities\, and we want to share them with you and ask you to help spread the word. \nEvent details \nThank you to everyone who registered for this event on Tuesday 18 February. We learnt how you can influence candidates in our State election to recognise that our natural environment needs to have a greater priority in their campaigns and after the election. SUMMARY:Protecting places we love
DESCRIPTION:2024 has been a difficult year for protecting our environment\, the patches that we love so well.  In the next week we expect that changes to the Environmental Protection Act will sail through the WA Parliament. We believe they will affect the independence of the EPA and take away some of our right to have a say . \nThere is a silver lining. In the face of this challenge the community conservation sector has formed a strong alliance under the leadership of the Conservation Council WA and together we have developed a blueprint for positive reform for better protection of the environment.  We will launch this at the CCWA Annual Conference in mid November. \nIt is clear that we need to create a groundswell of change in our communities to protect those natural places that we love. \nWe can protect our patch\, but how do we make sure that the bush or wetland or coastal strip or river edge ‘over there’ is not lost. DESCRIPTION:Medium density – liveable neighbourhoods – protection for urban bushland and species within. How can we have it all? \nIntroducing our Guest Speaker\nJulian Bolleter is the Director of the Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC) at the University of Western Australia\, the Program Director of AUDRC’s Master of Urban Design course\, and an author and public figure. \nJulian completed his PhD concerning landscape architecture in Dubai and has published five books\, ‘Made in Australia: The future of Australian cities’ (with Richard Weller)\, ‘Take me to the River: A history of Perth’s foreshore\,’ ‘Scavenging the Suburbs\,’ ‘The Ghost Cities of Australia\,’ and ‘Desert paradises: Surveying the landscapes of Dubai’s urban model.’ \nJulian’s current research focuses on the big issues facing Australian cities. \nOne of these is an ambitious climate adaptation project\, ‘Future climate\, future home: adaptive urban design strategies for WA’ with AUDRC partner organisations Development WA\, the Department of Communities\, the Western Australian Planning Commission\, and multiple Local Governments. \nYou can find out more about Julian’s work in The Conversation and on the Constructive Voices platform \nThe Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC)\nAUDRC has an overarching vision to be a centre of excellence for the design and planning of cities including urban planning and design issues affecting the shape\, sustainability and liveability of our cities. DESCRIPTION:Learn more about iNaturalist and how it can make an impact on your patch \nTwo users of iNaturalist\, Patrick Wake from Quinns Rock Environmental Group and Lydia Fenu from the UBC Committee and Wildflower Society WA (Armadale Branch)\, come together to show you their experiences with the app and to teach you how to use it. \nWhat is iNaturalist?\niNaturalist is a not-for-profit social network of people\, who share biodiversity information which helps each other conserve and learn more about nature. It has been run since 2008 now with more than 3 million users on the app and over 190 million observations worldwide. \nThe network works with the Atlas of Living Australia and Plants of the World Online to assist all people to identify and broaden their understanding of living things. \nGhost fungus photo by Jane Coffey\, featured image by Lydia Fenu \nWhy use iNaturalist?\nHelp protect your patch by ongoing recording of the biodiversity in your area for the public and land managers to see its value! iNaturalist can be used to record all living species in your area\, as long as you can get a photo of it! DESCRIPTION:Finding ways to protect urban bushland \nLearn essential advocacy skills in this interactive and practical workshop facilitated by green activist Lynn MacLaren. Lynn is a well-known conservation and human rights advocate with decades of campaign experience. She volunteers in local bushland ‘Friends’ groups and has convened the Albany Community Environment Centre Inc\, served on several boards including the Urban Bushland Council WA Inc. \nLynn has first-hand knowledge of government at both local and State level\, first as a Greens member of the WA State parliament for two terms\, and now as an elected City of Albany Councillor. Lynn is also a skilled trainer and consultant who has worked with many community groups to build capacity and strategy. \nPROGRAM \nThis workshop will be interactive and practical. \nYou will explore: \n\nThe meaning of ‘advocacy’… what\, when\, how? DESCRIPTION:Marie Giorgi and Sonya Elek have learned the importance of having a detailed strategy to create and maintain an effective campaign to save an important remnant Banksia woodland in Hamersley.  \nPresentation Now Available\nWe now have Marie and Sonya’s outstanding presentation on Saving Erindale Road Bushland on our website.  Admire the sustained advocacy they have shown in their campaign to save an important remnant Banksia woodland in Hamersley. \nAbout the Campaign\nAs foundation members of the Friends of Erindale Rd Bushland (FoERB)\, they and other members are facing a familiar story – their local bushland is proposed to be replaced by housing development – areas of Threatened Ecological Community are seemingly not exempt\, significant and highly sought after Banksia and Tuart woodland\, habitat areas for the threatened Carnaby Cockatoos and other local native fauna.   \n \nPatches where there are endangered plants and wildlife\, are part of the Banksia woodland threatened ecological community on the Swan Coastal Plain need our loud voices to make the community and Government aware of the continual threat of degradation and development.  \nMarie and Sonya have met many like-minded people along the way. With a strong committed group\, meetings have been held with local and State decision makers\, and have the support of the City of Stirling – a relationship conservation groups encourage in the pursuit of protecting our endangered communities.   \nIn the Autumn 2022 UBT Friends of Erindale Rd Bushland wrote a piece on tips for writing articles to the editor. SUMMARY:Lightning Swamp Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come along to our walk at Lightning Swamp. This is the largest bushland reserve managed by the City of Bayswater in conjunction with Friends of Lightning Swamp.  \n \nLightning Swamp comprises a seasonal wetland\, damplands and a perched wetland which support a higher diversity of aquatic and fringing vegetation in comparison to permanent wetlands. The site provides habitat to at least seven endemic frog species within the wetlands and riparian zones. It is a glorious refuge of biodiversity with over 170 unique species of flora \nNellie Gay from Friends of Lightning Swamp has offered to guide us through what she treasures here. DESCRIPTION:Urban Greening\nThe State Government is developing an urban greening strategy to help make Perth and Peel greener\, cooler and more liveable into the future. This strategy is expected to be finalised by the end of 2024. The Strategy will be developed based on the best available evidence and international best practices as well as acknowledging the work of local government and other existing urban greening initiatives. An URBAN GREENING SURVEY has been developed to receive community input. \nWhilst the Urban Bushland Council (UBC) is pleased to see the WA Government focussing on ‘Urban Greening’ we are most concerned about specific aspects of the current plan and problematic omissions. The ecological and wellbeing benefits of ‘tree canopy’ and ‘ecological linkages’ cannot be created in isolations of our natural areas. \nInformation Session 10 April\nThanks to all who joined us our information session on 10 April about the benefits of canopy cover\, nature nearby & having your voice heard…. \nUBC in collaboration with WA Tree Canopy Advocates (WATCA)\, Wetlands Conservation Society (WCS)\, Wildflower Society of WA (WSWA) and Birdlife WA (BWA) made presentations on their perspectives of the importance of urban greening. \nWe are now preparing a guide to help you complete the survey about the ‘Perth & Peel Urban Greening Strategy’. This will be available by 25 April (Anzac Day). \nWe suggest that you wait for our guidance before completing the survey. SUMMARY:Limestone Karst Ecosystems and Honeymyrtle Shrubland
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about this TEC\nOur scholars are coming together for a day to share their lifetimes’ knowledge of one of Perth natural coastal wonders\, Karst limestone ecosystems and Honey Myrtle Shrublands of the Swan Coastal Plain.  Federally listed in November 2023 as critically endangered\, it is up to all of us to know these remnants\, advocate for their preservation and restore their biodiversity. They are our natural inheritance.   \nSo where are they found\, who’s been looking out for them?  Coastal limestone hills and ridges are embedded with colourful stories handed down through Aboriginal generations. He will present on the emerging and urgent campaign to safeguard WA’s EPA and Environment.  This campaign is being led by CCWA with the collaboration of all the environmental NGOs in Western Australia. Unfortunately Giz Watson is unable to attend and share the stage with Richard. \nOur Guest Speakers\n  \nRichard Yin is the Deputy Chair of Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA). He has been a major part of the organisation’s restructuring\, the planning and overseeing of several WA-based campaigns\, the implementation of an organisational review and later a cultural review process which has greatly improved the organisation’s efficiencies\, which in turn increased its reach and impact.  Richard is a general practitioner and has owned two practices. Through these\, Richard has a good understanding of human resources and workplace culture and the importance of these in settings requiring high performance teams working in high stress environments. Richard was elected President at CCWA’s AGM November 2023 \nGiz Watson is a foundation environmental science graduate from Murdoch University. She brings extensive knowledge of the WA environment – marine and terrestrial\, as well as demonstrated long history of commitment to environmental and political activism and skills in collaborative planning\, teambuilding and strategic planning. As an MP\, Giz has held numerous portfolios including biodiversity\, urban bushland\, marine issues\, forests and woodlands\, waste management and agriculture. She also drafted\, introduced and debated Bills on biodiversity protection\, protecting Margaret River from coal mining\, cat management and making WA nuclear free. DESCRIPTION:Building a community to look after your bushland is the secret to success! \nCome to our workshop on Sunday 26 November\, learn from the best and share experiences with other bushcare groups. \nThe Workshop\nYou will learn the theory and practice of ‘asset mapping’ for community building and gain practical skills and strategies for your Friends group \nLeave ENERGISED and EMPOWERED!! \nThis workshop is tailored to bushland Friends groups and complements UBC’s Volunteer Recruitment Guide published earlier this year. We encourage you to come along with another person from your group so that you can immediately translate what you learn into useful ideas to take home to your group. \nOur Facilitator\nWe are really excited to have Peter Kenyon lead this workshop. SUMMARY:Two Way Science in your Bushland
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS TWO WAY SCIENCE? AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?\nStudent Learning in your bushland \nAs members of Friends groups we all know the importance of immersing children in bushland. And we are also keen to develop relationships with schools and share our patches with their students.  Being ‘on country’ is also a powerful way of embedding respect for Aboriginal cultures. This is the essence of two way science. \nSo what does a First Nations perspective look like? How do we practice two-way science? Where are the hooks in the curriculum that means bringing school children into our patches is worth the administrative burden for teachers? \nCome along and find out about two way science from one of the Western Australia’s pioneers of this way of learning.  This is an opportunity to have ‘education talk’ demystified and work out how you might engage with your local school. What works best with children?\nHow can we use our bushland to practice two-way science with school students; and how can we involve Aboriginal educators\nWhat are curriculum elaborations and will understanding them help us develop that relationship with our local school?\n\nMEET OUR PRESENTER – DR ELAINE LEWIS\nDr Elaine Lewis is Cross Curriculum Leader and Senior Teacher at Coolbinia Primary School. She is also their River Rangers Instructor and Roots and Shoots Coordinator. Coolbinia Primary School has about 2 ha of bushland on the school site\, and that bushland is their outdoor classroom. Elaine is a great innovator and leader at this school and their work in sustainability has been recognised by many awards as well as being featured in the WA Government’s sustainability framework “Caring for Country Together”. \nAlongside David Broun (now with CSIRO) & Rita Lusted (WA Department of Education)\, Elaine has piloted the Two Way Science Schools project during 2021 – 22. SUMMARY:Urban Forest Strategy
DESCRIPTION:The Urban Forest Strategy is a WA State Government strategy that our local governments are adopting.  \nWe face many challenges to protect our local biodiversity and yet we also know that keeping nature and functioning ecosystems nearby is paramount for our health\, well-being and prosperity.  Reduced rainfall\, saline aquifers\, smaller gardens\, overhead powerlines\, more hot bricks and roofs are stressing trees making them more prone to disease.   \nThe best way now to connect our fragmented bushland remnants to save species appears to be through streetscape treatments.  The importance of urban forest in developed areas is prompting State and local governments to take steps to improve and manage tree canopy. SUMMARY:What are POLYPHAGOUS SHOT HOLE BORERS?
DESCRIPTION:Polyphagous shot hole borers (Euwallacea fornicatus) are small beetles native to Southeast Asia that attack a wide range of plants. They burrow into the trunk\, stems and branches to eventually cause death. Recently the borers have been found in 40% of Perth suburbs and pose a serious threat to our canopy cover and bushland trees. \nThe Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has now introduced a Quarantine Area covering 25 LGAs from Kwinana in the south to Sorrento in the north. \nCome along to the UBC’s next General Meeting on Wednesday 26th July (6pm for 6.30pm) to hear from Kylie Ireland (DBCA) and Dominic Castledine (DPIRD) about these pests and what can be done to stop their spread across the state. Learn about the DPIRD Quarantine system and about the management of infested trees. DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has reminded us that “The Greater Brixton Street Wetlands (GBSW) are one of the most important wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain with outstanding biodiversity attributed to the unique geological\, geomorphic and hydrological characteristics”. \nJoin UBC\, Friends of Brixton Street Wetlands and the wider community conservation network to learn more about the negative and far-reaching impacts of the proposed expansion of the Maddington Kenwick Strategic Employment Area (MKSEA). See the details on the City of Gosnells consultation hub.  This plan would have significant adverse impacts for water & hydrology\, buffers\, connectivity\, pollution and livability. Hear from researchers\, consultants and long-time volunteers who have advocated and cared for the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands for decades. You will also learn more about the proposed Yule Brook Regional Park that would link the Darling Scarp\, through the GBSW to the Canning River. DESCRIPTION:An essential guide to recruit and retain bushcare volunteers\nVolunteers live longer! \nVolunteering reduces chronic health risks similar to eating 6 portions of vegetables everyday*. \nScience shows us that social connection is as important for our health as nutrition and exercise. Can we infer volunteers get to eat more cake**? \nThe Urban Bushland Council has spent the last 12 months learning lots about the current state of volunteering\, in particular recruiting and retaining volunteers in Friends Groups and they want to let you know what’s been learnt. \nAs part of the Building Community Capacity to Care for Urban Bushland project\, we are ready to launch a Volunteer and Recruitment Guide for Bushcare Friends Groups to assist with this essential process. \nThe evening will host a Welcome to Country by Daniel Garlett\, catered bushfood inspired snacks\, short talks by the initiators of the project\, the participating groups and finally there will be a brief facilitated activity to assist you with your volunteer recruitment planning. \nThere will be cake too. \nJoin Us\nJoin us in the Conference Room at City West Lotteries House from 6:00 pm for refreshments. We are an incorporated\, voluntary\, non-government organisation and play a crucial role in advocating with Government of all levels for bushland protection. \nDespite numerous statements and commitments by Governments over many years\, urban bushland continues to degrade and disappear at an alarming rate.
