SUMMARY:Conservation and Restoration in the GBSW
DESCRIPTION:There is new conservation work being funded in the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands! \nMain Wetlands (Early Winter). Photo Credit: Subas P. Dhakal.\nAnd as we know\, the GBSW is an area of enormous biodiversity and fragility that is being impacted by multiple threats – ranging from rubbish dumping and vandalism; fire\, climate change and encroaching development. It is cared for by the Friends of Brixton Street Wetlands and the Friends of Alison Baird Reserve. \nIn really good news in December 2024\, WA government announced funding of $1.5 Million to support on-ground conservation work in the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands.  This would assist local community groups and employ an officer to oversee the area\, undertake weed control\, restoration\, biodiversity monitoring\, rubbish removal\, and improve local signage. \nCat Williams\, known to many of us as being with SERCUL\, was appointed to the ongoing role of Operations Officer\, Conservation. \nHear from  Cat about her plans and the progress being made to care for the GBSW. \nMeet our speaker – Cat Williams \nCat has worked in the landcare industry in WA for many years\, including with APACE WA\, EMRC and SERCUL prior to joining DBCA.  She was a National Women in Landcare Award winner in 2025. \nCitation: Catherine is an outstanding Community Landcare Manager at Southeastern Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) who provides invaluable support to volunteers and land managers. She promotes and enables the conservation\, management\, and protection of Perth’s urban nature reserves and bushland. Catherine supports Friends Of and landcare groups\, advocating for the community and assisting with a wide range of activities\, from grant writing to on-ground work\, publicity\, and communication. \nShe has now joined DBCA as the Operations Officer (Conservation) for the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands. This is a permanent role and one of the very few positions in DBCA allocated solely to a single site. \nJoin Us\nWe hope that you will join us at City West Lotteries House\, 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth on Wednesday 26 August.  The doors will open at 6:00 pm for light refreshments; session starts at 6:30 pm. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along. You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au. \nIf you can’t make it to West Perth\, you can join us online via Zoom. Please email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au to request the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Seed Genetics and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Are you thinking about genetic diversity as you plan your next revegetation project? \nSeed genetics play an important role in the success of restoration projects but is often considered too hard to understand. \nThe genetic diversity of seed is\, however\, the evolutionary material that allows plant populations to respond to environmental change. \nPopulation size\, reproductive strategy\, pollinator movements and distance between populations are just some of the important influences on seed genetic diversity. \nUnderstanding these influences can help collectors to source seed with high genetic diversity that will help to ensure the long-term success of their restoration projects. \nOur speaker\nDr Linda Broadhurst recently retired as Director of the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research\, a joint venture between CSIRO National Research Collections Australia and the Director of National Parks. \nDuring Linda’s research career her has research interests included conservation and restoration genetics and improving seed collection practices for better restoration outcomes. \nShe also spent many years translating scientific findings to help improve on ground seed collection and use practices to ensure that plantings has a broad genetic base \nJoin Us\nWe hope that you will join us City West Lotteries House\, 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth.  The doors will open at 6:00 pm for light refreshments; session starts at 6:30 pm. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along.
