SUMMARY:Introducing BoorYul-Bah-Bilya
DESCRIPTION:BoorYul-Bah-Bilya (BBB) is the flagship program of Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association (BNAA)\, an Aboriginal-led environmental charity based in the Perth Hills. \nThe program’s first plan focuses on the Mandoon Bilya\, or Helena River\, near Perth. \nBBB is all about restoring ecosystems\, reinvigorating cultural heritage and reconnecting our communities with rivers. \nMost Western Australian rivers are degraded and less than 1% of our major rivers are in pristine or near-pristine condition. \nBBB aims to address declining river health through creation of a new type of community catchment plan that is built from the ground up. \nBBB is the first program of its kind to consider environmental\, social\, cultural and economic values in one integrated plan\, allowing a better balance between the many values of rivers. \nIts grassroots approach ensures local knowledge is embedded throughout and enables community\, residents\, businesses\, schools and government to contribute towards the future vision. \nHowever\, BNAA hope to have far-reaching impacts by creating a transferable model that can be applied to any river. \nFor more information\, visit BBB here  \nOur guest speaker \nBNAA Executive Director\, Francesca Flynn\, will share the program’s vision and current projects which include the Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz\, eDNA sampling\, cultural mapping\, monitoring of a recently discovered Perth Hills quokka population\, and the proposed Mandoon Bilya Regional Riverpark. \nJoin Us\nJoin us on Wednesday 24 September  at City West Lotteries House at 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth. We will open the doors to the Conference Room at 6:00 pm and serve light refreshments. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along. You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au. \nIf you can’t make it to West Perth\, you can join us online via Zoom. SUMMARY:The Facts about Prescribed Burning
DESCRIPTION:By Peta Kelsey from South-West Forests Defence Foundation Inc. \nThe Department of Biodiversity\, Conservation and Attractions currently spends more that 50 million dollars per year to undertake extensive\, industrial-scale prescribed burning in the South-West Forest Region. \nGeophysicist Peta Kelsey describes DBCA’s current prescribed burning program and discusses its effectiveness in preventing subsequent wildfire and protecting people and infrastructure\, as well as its impact on biodiversity\, forest flammability\, human health and greenhouse gas emissions. \nMuch of the content of her talk can be found in the Prescribed Burning Fact Sheets published on the South-West Forests Defence Foundation website.  These Fact Sheets provide details of the scientific research which shows that prescribed burning as it is currently practised in the south-west forest regions does not give effective protection from wildfires\, is hazardous to people’s health and is causing irreversible loss of biodiversity. \nSFDF contends that rapid detection and suppression provide the best protection from wildfires. \nMore about SFDF\nSouth-West Forests Defence Foundation Inc. (SFDF) is a not-for-profit voluntary group that has been involved for nearly five decades with the better management and protection of the forests of the south-west region of Western Australia. \nSaving jarrah and karri native forest in Western Australia \nJoin Us\nJoin us on Thursday 26 June at City West Lotteries House at 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth. SUMMARY:2025 AGM – Speaker topic: Creating the Yule Brook Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2025\nCome along to UBC’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 4 March 2025 from 6:00 pm for a 6:30 pm start at City West Lotteries House.  The Agenda and its attachments are available here. The Chairperson’s Report is available here. Nominations for all but one committee position were received by close of nominations.  You can find that information in the Agenda. We will call for interest in the role of Secretary at the AGM. \nJoin us in 2025 and help us advocate for change to protect our precious urban natural vegetation and the species that rely on that habitat. \nNOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES TO UBC RULES\nWe have proposed some changes to our Rules at the Annual General Meeting.  They will be available now available here (overview) and in full here.  They are also attached to the Agenda. The main reason for these changes is that our Deductible Gift Recipiency status is now subject to the Rules of the Australian Tax Office.  The other proposed changes will increase responsiveness and reduce the administrative burden on a wholly volunteer run organisation. \nKEYNOTE SPEAKER AGM 2025: DANIEL JAN MARTIN – CREATING THE YULE BROOK REGIONAL PARK \nThis presentation launches UBC’s 2025 campaigning for the creation of the Yule Brook Regional Park. \nDaniel will present a vision for the Yule Brook Regional Park – from Lesmurdie Falls\, along the Yule Brook beside the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands and into the Canning River.  UBC and The Beeliar Group – Professors for Environmental Responsibility (and many others) see the creation of this regional park as the single most effective way of protection the extraordinary biodiversity of the Brixton Street Wetlands and adjacent landforms.  Daniel has been instrumental in developing the mapping that supports the Yule Brook Regional Park. You can read more in A Jewel in the Crown of a global biodiversity hotspot edited by Hans Lambers \nAchieving success will require sustained advocacy.  This area of the Swan Coastal Plain is currently subject to a number of development proposals that all have the potential for environmental harm to the GBSW through changes to hydrology that impact further than the development lines drawn on the map. \nDaniel Jan Martin is an environmental planner and designer working in south west Australia on Noongar Country. He is a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture at The University of Western Australia. He also co-leads the collaborative practice Super Natural. His work explores ways of mapping and designing with our water systems and ecosystems — with expertise across geospatial analysis\, sustainability and urban design. A passion for environmental communication drives his work — sharing\, translating and advocating. \nYou might know his mapping work in the ‘Forest Atlas’ which helped shape many of our submissions to the Forest Management Plan\, or his more recent work for Save Beeliar Wetlands and the Cockburn Community Wildlife Corridor where he demonstrated how the Roe 9 lands could optimise public open space whilst meeting the WA government’s desire for more housing! \nEvent information\nWe look forward to welcoming you to our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 4th March. Please let us know that you are coming along.  You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au. If you can’t make it to West Perth\, you can join us online via Zoom. Please email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au to request the Zoom link. You can join from 6:30 pm for the AGM or from 7 pm for the presentation.

SUMMARY:Protecting places we love
DESCRIPTION:2024 has been a difficult year for protecting our environment\, the patches that we love so well.  In the next week we expect that changes to the Environmental Protection Act will sail through the WA Parliament. We believe they will affect the independence of the EPA and take away some of our right to have a say . \nThere is a silver lining. In the face of this challenge the community conservation sector has formed a strong alliance under the leadership of the Conservation Council WA and together we have developed a blueprint for positive reform for better protection of the environment.  We will launch this at the CCWA Annual Conference in mid November. \nIt is clear that we need to create a groundswell of change in our communities to protect those natural places that we love. \nWe can protect our patch\, but how do we make sure that the bush or wetland or coastal strip or river edge ‘over there’ is not lost. We need to extend our care to those patches as well. \nCollectively\, we have the voices\, the people passionate about their patch\, their cause. \nCome along and help us work out ways that we can change the stories around biodiversity loss through our own actions. \nConnect with like-minded conservationists and leave with some new ideas. \nYour presenters \n\nChristine Richardson\, Chairperson UBC\nColma Keating\, UBC and member of WA Landcarer’s Hall of Fame\nRhiannon Hardwick\, Program Manager for CCWA’s Nature Program\n\nJOIN US\nJoin us on Wednesday 23 October at City West Lotteries House at 2 Delhi Street\, West Perth. We will open the doors to the Conference Room at 6:00 pm and serve light refreshments. \nPlease let us know that you are coming along. SUMMARY:Friends of Erindale Rd Bushland Talk
DESCRIPTION:Marie Giorgi and Sonya Elek have learned the importance of having a detailed strategy to create and maintain an effective campaign to save an important remnant Banksia woodland in Hamersley.  \nPresentation Now Available\nWe now have Marie and Sonya’s outstanding presentation on Saving Erindale Road Bushland on our website.  Admire the sustained advocacy they have shown in their campaign to save an important remnant Banksia woodland in Hamersley. \nAbout the Campaign\nAs foundation members of the Friends of Erindale Rd Bushland (FoERB)\, they and other members are facing a familiar story – their local bushland is proposed to be replaced by housing development – areas of Threatened Ecological Community are seemingly not exempt\, significant and highly sought after Banksia and Tuart woodland\, habitat areas for the threatened Carnaby Cockatoos and other local native fauna.   \n \nPatches where there are endangered plants and wildlife\, are part of the Banksia woodland threatened ecological community on the Swan Coastal Plain need our loud voices to make the community and Government aware of the continual threat of degradation and development.  \nMarie and Sonya have met many like-minded people along the way. With a strong committed group\, meetings have been held with local and State decision makers\, and have the support of the City of Stirling – a relationship conservation groups encourage in the pursuit of protecting our endangered communities.   \nIn the Autumn 2022 UBT Friends of Erindale Rd Bushland wrote a piece on tips for writing articles to the editor. The Autumn 2024 UBT  describes their experience in creating petitions to Parliament.  \nUBC will follow up this presentation with an advocacy skills workshop for Bushcare groups on 23rd June!   \nSet aside Wednesday\, 5 June to be inspired by Marie and Sonya’s campaigning experience and how to put a spotlight on threats to our bushland. \nDoors open from 6pm\, feel free to email us if you’d like a zoom link.

SUMMARY:Why would younger people join your group
DESCRIPTION:Recruiting and retaining volunteers is a significant challenge being faced by many of our “Friends of” groups. \nAnd yet\, many young people are engaged in volunteering. In Mission Australia’s 2020 survey of young Australians volunteering was reported as one of the three top activities (after sports and about the same as arts activities). Furthermore\, young people are more likely to volunteer informally. And yet\, the environment was the second most important issue for young people in the Mission Australia 2021 Youth Survey. \nMeet Young Volunteers\n \nSo\, to answer some questions we will be inviting a panel of younger people (14-35 yo) to share their actual experiences. \n\nWhat drives them?\nHow could we invite them to join our activities/group?\nWhat are some of their favourite activities?\nWhat skills & experience do they bring? (eg planting\, social media\, finances)\nWhat has worked to maintain connection with a local group?\nHow can groups meet them half-way?\n\nIt will be a terrific opportunity to hear their guidance. You can then ask your burning questions as well as highlight your own experiences. \nJoin Us\nJoin us in the Conference Room at City West Lotteries House from 6:00 pm for refreshments. Please let us know that you are coming along.  You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au \nPhoto by Heidi Hardisty – Lake Claremont bushland rehabilitation volunteering

SUMMARY:The fire ecology of Banksia woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Russell Miller is a PhD candidate\, Murdoch University\, Kings Park Science and will discuss his research on the fire ecology of Banksia woodlands. \nBanksia woodlands have a long association with fire. Over tens of thousands of years\, our local plant species have developed strategies not only to tolerate but sometimes benefit from recurrent fire. A fundamental concept in fire ecology is that plants are adapted to certain fire regimes (i.e.\, frequency\, seasonality\, and intensity) but if populations experience fire outside of this\, they are likely to decline. \nFor his PhD research\, he investigated how native plant populations change with time since fire and under varying fire seasonality to identify species’ tolerance of varying fire regimes. \nField surveys revealed post-fire juvenile periods of 1 – 5 years\, indicating that populations recover reproductive maturity quickly after fire and even some obligate seeding species may have the capacity to cope with relatively short fire intervals. Surveys also showed that seedling recruitment occurs during the inter-fire period\, a phenomenon uncommon in fire-prone ecosystems but not unexpected given our knowledge that canopy seed bank species are weakly serotinous in Banksia woodlands. \nInter-fire recruitment may help buffer populations from decline with the long absence of fire. Russell also conducted a field trial emulating the effects of season of fire and showed that unseasonal fire can substantially reduce seedling recruitment. Poor recruitment from emulated unseasonal fire was the result of low seedling emergence\, shortened seedling establishment times\, and reduced seed persistence. \nOverall\, his research extends our understanding of the unique fire ecology of Banksia woodlands and reveals the potential consequences of altered fire regimes. \n

SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Dr Hugh Finn\, Chair of the Board\, Environmental Defenders Office \nTitle: “The Invisible Harm: Land Clearing and the Welfare of Our Native Fauna” \nHugh puts the view that another reason to avoid clearing and another reason to value native vegetation is the harm that land clearing causes to individual wild animals. Hugh will also be happy to deal with any questions about the legal framework for clearing native vegetation. \nThe Environmental Defenders Office (WA) is an independent\, accredited community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law. It is an accredited member of the National Association of Community Legal Centres – independently operated not-for-profit community organisations that provide legal and related services to the public. \nThe EDO’s core objectives are: \n\nProtecting the environment through law.\nActively engaging in policy and law reform processes to improve environmental laws.\nEnsuring that the community receives expert legal advice and representation in public interest environmental matters.\nBuilding community skills and knowledge to facilitate public participation in environmental decision-making.
