SUMMARY:Building community capacity
DESCRIPTION:TO CARE FOR URBAN BUSHLAND \nProject Update\nHear about our new approach to capacity building for Friends groups\, our trials and tribulations and our successes. Find out where are we now\, what’s coming up and how this project can benefit all our groups. And come along and meet Johanna Riddell\, our project officer. \nThe Project\nFriends groups that are active\, viable and influential are better able to advocate for and protect their bushland. Through this project UBC will help establish new Friends groups for bushland sites where there is no Friends group; work with some Friends groups encountering problems with volunteer recruitment and help groups be more successful through capacity building workshops. What we learn during this process will become a volunteer recruitment and retention plan for our members and beyond. \n \nWe are working with Friends of Wireless Hill\, Friends of Star Swamp Bushland\, Friends of Trigg Bushland\, Friends of Lake Gwelup and Friends of Erindale Road Bushland as well as initiating a friends group for Cottonwood Bushland in Dianella. \nGeneral Meeting\nOur presentation will be preceded by a short General Meeting of the Urban Bushland Council\, commencing at 6:30 pm.  Member Groups will be asked to vote on proposed changes to the Rules (or constitution).  You can find the Agenda and proposed Rule changes here. Member Groups are invited to appoint a proxy if they are unable to attend the meeting. The PROXY  form is here and should be handed to the Secretary prior to the meeting commencing or via email by COB Monday 28 November. \nJoin Us\nJoin us in the Conference Room at City West Lotteries House from 6:00 pm for refreshments. Please let us know that you are coming along.  You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au. You may also wish to join us online – email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au to request a Zoom link. \nAcknowledgements\nPhoto credits: Margaret Matthews (Friends of Wireless Hill) and Christine Curry (Friends of Star Swamp Bushland) \nThis project is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program

SUMMARY:Why would younger people join your group
DESCRIPTION:Recruiting and retaining volunteers is a significant challenge being faced by many of our “Friends of” groups. \nAnd yet\, many young people are engaged in volunteering. In Mission Australia’s 2020 survey of young Australians volunteering was reported as one of the three top activities (after sports and about the same as arts activities). Furthermore\, young people are more likely to volunteer informally. And yet\, the environment was the second most important issue for young people in the Mission Australia 2021 Youth Survey. \nMeet Young Volunteers\n \nSo\, to answer some questions we will be inviting a panel of younger people (14-35 yo) to share their actual experiences. \n\nWhat drives them?\nHow could we invite them to join our activities/group?\nWhat are some of their favourite activities?\nWhat skills & experience do they bring? (eg planting\, social media\, finances)\nWhat has worked to maintain connection with a local group?\nHow can groups meet them half-way?\n\nIt will be a terrific opportunity to hear their guidance. You can then ask your burning questions as well as highlight your own experiences. \nJoin Us\nJoin us in the Conference Room at City West Lotteries House from 6:00 pm for refreshments. Please let us know that you are coming along.  You can either RSVP at the bottom of this page (keep scrolling) or else email ubc@bushlandperth.org.au \nPhoto by Heidi Hardisty – Lake Claremont bushland rehabilitation volunteering

SUMMARY:The fire ecology of Banksia woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Russell Miller is a PhD candidate\, Murdoch University\, Kings Park Science and will discuss his research on the fire ecology of Banksia woodlands. \nBanksia woodlands have a long association with fire. Over tens of thousands of years\, our local plant species have developed strategies not only to tolerate but sometimes benefit from recurrent fire. A fundamental concept in fire ecology is that plants are adapted to certain fire regimes (i.e.\, frequency\, seasonality\, and intensity) but if populations experience fire outside of this\, they are likely to decline. \nFor his PhD research\, he investigated how native plant populations change with time since fire and under varying fire seasonality to identify species’ tolerance of varying fire regimes. \nField surveys revealed post-fire juvenile periods of 1 – 5 years\, indicating that populations recover reproductive maturity quickly after fire and even some obligate seeding species may have the capacity to cope with relatively short fire intervals. Surveys also showed that seedling recruitment occurs during the inter-fire period\, a phenomenon uncommon in fire-prone ecosystems but not unexpected given our knowledge that canopy seed bank species are weakly serotinous in Banksia woodlands. \nInter-fire recruitment may help buffer populations from decline with the long absence of fire. Russell also conducted a field trial emulating the effects of season of fire and showed that unseasonal fire can substantially reduce seedling recruitment. Poor recruitment from emulated unseasonal fire was the result of low seedling emergence\, shortened seedling establishment times\, and reduced seed persistence. \nOverall\, his research extends our understanding of the unique fire ecology of Banksia woodlands and reveals the potential consequences of altered fire regimes. \n

SUMMARY:NatureLink Perth: sustaining biodiversity in Perth into the future
DESCRIPTION:The UBC has organized a very special speaker for you at our General Meeting in April! \nSo save this date: Monday 15th April\, 6pm when Dr Jane Chambers will speak of how she and her team at Murdoch University are setting a feverish pace to unravel why plan after plan at State and Local level have not been upheld to sustain Perth’s biodiversity into the future. Hear what Jane has already discovered – and perhaps even add to this – before she takes Naturelink to a Perth Symposium in 4th July\, where all stakeholders will meet. \nHer topic will be: \n‘NatureLink Perth: sustaining biodiversity in Perth into the future’.\n  \nDr Jane Chambers is the Academic Chair of Environmental Science\, Management and Sustainability at Murdoch University. She has over 30 years experience in wetlands\, rivers and estuaries in South Western Australia primarily in the area of aquatic plant ecology\, management and restoration. \nFor more about Dr Jane Chambers see here. \nPhoto credit: Marg Owen. SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Dr Hugh Finn\, Chair of the Board\, Environmental Defenders Office \nTitle: “The Invisible Harm: Land Clearing and the Welfare of Our Native Fauna” \nHugh puts the view that another reason to avoid clearing and another reason to value native vegetation is the harm that land clearing causes to individual wild animals. Hugh will also be happy to deal with any questions about the legal framework for clearing native vegetation. \nThe Environmental Defenders Office (WA) is an independent\, accredited community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law. It is an accredited member of the National Association of Community Legal Centres – independently operated not-for-profit community organisations that provide legal and related services to the public. \nThe EDO’s core objectives are: \n\nProtecting the environment through law.\nActively engaging in policy and law reform processes to improve environmental laws.\nEnsuring that the community receives expert legal advice and representation in public interest environmental matters.\nBuilding community skills and knowledge to facilitate public participation in environmental decision-making.
