SUMMARY:Step into the Gosnells Bush
DESCRIPTION:Why care for the bush \nAs people spread out across the landscape\, we lose habitat for our native species. Plants have to compete with introduced species. Animals have trouble finding food. \nDragonfly on the Star of Bethlehem. Photo Credit: Subas P. Dhakal.\nNear here\, we have the Greater Brixton Street/ Kenwick Wetlands. This extensive wetland is only 1% of the Perth metro area reserves but is home to 70% of Perth’s floral species. Some are small or hard to find. A lot of them were burned recently. There is a lot to learn about this reserve. \nWe at the Urban Bushland Council are concerned about the loss of our natural species. We aim to encourage you to join in with efforts to care for nature in the bush and extend bush habitat. \nTo start\, we invite you to a free workshop to share stories about our bush\, share uncertainties\, talk about volunteering\, and meet nearby neighbours. \nGreen Edge Pinkgill Fungi. Photo Credit: Subas P. Dhakal.\nPerhaps you will be enthused to plant native species in your garden. \nPerhaps you will join a group of volunteers who help to rehabilitate a reserve somewhere … or one of the many other ways you can join in. \nYou will meet people from a range of community associations as well as local indigenous leaders\, community environmental groups and experts with local and scientific knowledge. \nYou will also join a guided walk so we can show you the amazing biodiversity of our local bush. \nJoin us\nSunday September 27\, 2026 at at Connect@Kenwick\, sometimes called the Mud Hut\, at 84 Brixton Street\, Kenwick from 10 am. Refreshments will be provided. \nWe thank DBCA and WA Landcare Network for their funding support.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Brunch: Hills to the Coast
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we come together during National Volunteer Week 2026 to recognise and celebrate the many years of dedication shown by our bushcarers. \nThis is a special opportunity to acknowledge those who give so generously of their time and energy to care and advocate for our precious bushlands – often in tough conditions\, always with deep commitment to the natural environment. A chance to connect with fellow volunteers\, acknowledge shared achievements and look ahead to the future of bushcare\, including volunteer recruitment and supporting the next generation of carers. \nUBC’s co-hosts are: \n\nNature Reserves Preservation Group (Kalamunda)\nFriends of Brixton Street Wetlands (Gosnells)\nFriends of the Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore (Canning)\nWildflower Society of WA – Armadale Branch (Armadale).\n\nTheir members ‘work’ within the catchment of the Yule Brook\, an important waterway that originates as Upper Lesmurdie Falls and empties into the Canning River.  Along the way it feeds the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands – an extraordinary area that contains around half of Greater Perth’s floral species in just 1% of the region. Collectively\, these organisations represent more than 195 years of urban conservation experience\, protecting bushland under increasing pressure from climate change and development – just like you! \nSponsored by: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPlease register as soon as possible so that we can sort out catering.
