SUMMARY:Northern Perth Honeymyrtle Shrubland Excursion
DESCRIPTION:Is your patch Honeymyrtle Shrubland?\nAs a member of a friends group or a land manager of one of these critically endangered patches\, you are invited to our northern Perth Honeymyrtle Shrubland (HMS) excursion. Although the limestone ridges and hills of the Swan Coastal Plain have been significantly altered since settlement there are still some good patches of HMS around. \nWalk with\, listen to and learn from “The Keigherys”\, our plant experts\, how to protect and enhance our patches. We will explore what the Northern Perth HMS looks like when we examine the suite of plants found on the coast in Bush Forever 325 at Iluka Foreshore\, City of Joondalup and inland on Shire View Hill\, Bush Forever 293\, City of Wanneroo. Some restoration has occurred at the Iluka site but the latter site remains untouched except for wildfires. \nIt is important in restoration work to put back the local provenance as it has unique characteristics in floristic complexes or specific variations of the same plant. Two plants of the HMS complex\, Melaleuca systena and Grevillea preissii vary in leaf and stem characteristics. Bring along a photo (or a sample\, if legal) of what you believe to be your endemic examples of M. systena and G. preissii and compare them to the northern varieties. It will be an interesting discussion as previous restoration work may have included non-local varieties. \nJoin Us\nMeet at the Iluka Foreshore carpark (100m north of the Shenton Ave roundabout) at 9 am for a 45-60 minute tour before heading off to Shire View Hill\, 15 minutes away. Best to carpool for this leg as the access road off East Wattle Rd\, through to the site is narrow. We will be walking up to 500m on rough limestone ground and expect to be there for one hour. We plan to be back to the Iluka Foreshore at about 11.30am. \nA coffee van operates from this carpark. And if you would like to revisit the coastal revegetation site and stunning coastline\, you can do this at your leisure or take a guided walk with the local friends group co-ordinator. \nRegister here (scroll down the page)\, or RSVP to sue.conlan@bushlandperth.org.au.  If you can’t make it\, pass on the invitation to another who would benefit. \nWhat to wear\nHat\, sturdy shoes and water bottle are recommended. As we will be in “Tick Country”\, please ensure you have adequate protection- clothing and repellent. \nMore Information\nOur Honey Myrtle Shrubland symposium March 2024 presentations can be found here. \nFederal Listing of the Honey Myrtle Shrubland on limestone ridges of the SCP Nov 2023
