Friends of Porteous Park
“Friends of Porteous Park”, located in Sorrento, WA, was formed in November 2001. This 2.2 ha banksia wood, although very biodiverse, had fallen into a degraded condition, had been subjected to frequent fires (suspected arson), and needed urgent community involvement to restore it.
Since then, the group meets almost every week right through the year (now every Wednesday morning, 7:30am to 9:30am, followed by a coffee) to do on-ground work, planting thousands of local provenance seedlings and removing countless weeds and litter. Most of the reserve is now in very “very good” condition. Over the years, the group has involved surrounding residents to educate them about the the importance of our local bushland ecosystem, and its role as a natural linkage through suburbia. The bushland is frequently visited by Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos and Rainbow Bee-Eaters. Photos of all the flora, fauna and fungi of the reserve have been taken over the years by a friends group member and uploaded to iNaturalist.
