Seed Genetics and Restoration
Wednesday 23 September from 18:00 to 20:00
Free
Are you thinking about genetic diversity as you plan your next revegetation project?
Seed genetics play an important role in the success of restoration projects but is often considered too hard to understand.
The genetic diversity of seed is, however, the evolutionary material that allows plant populations to respond to environmental change.
Population size, reproductive strategy, pollinator movements and distance between populations are just some of the important influences on seed genetic diversity.
Understanding these influences can help collectors to source seed with high genetic diversity that will help to ensure the long-term success of their restoration projects.
Our speaker
Dr Linda Broadhurst recently retired as Director of the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research, a joint venture between CSIRO National Research Collections Australia and the Director of National Parks.
During Linda’s research career her has research interests included conservation and restoration genetics and improving seed collection practices for better restoration outcomes.
She also spent many years translating scientific findings to help improve on ground seed collection and use practices to ensure that plantings has a broad genetic base
