Friends of Sorrento Beach & Marmion Foreshore

In December 2025, “Friends of Sorrento Beach & Marmion Foreshore” celebrated its 25th Anniversary since the group commenced work on the coastal reserve of Sorrento, extending into the Marmion in 2013. The adjacent shared coastal path is a major “passive recreational” facility, used by thousands of walkers and cyclists every week. The adjacent beaches are also some of the most popular in Perth, also accommodating a major surf club and angling club.

Our group has undertaken an “ecological restoration” over the entire 2.5km length, have maintained the native garden beds at Sorrento Beach and even some landscaping along West Coast Drive too.

The group meets almost every Thursday morning (7:30am to 9:30am, followed by a coffee) right through the year to do on-ground work, has planted nearly 38,000 native seedlings (with an overall survival rate of about 80%) since commencing the project and removing countless weeds and litter. Of the 40 weed species we remove prior to seed shed, 13 of those have been totally eliminated. About 70% of the area was initially in a “degraded” condition and has now been independently accessed to be entirely in “very good” condition. Over the years, the group has involved schools, clubs and corporate groups, educating people about the coast and the importance of our local native ecosystems.
